4th of July

Monday, July 4th, 2011

Today is an awesome day! Today is the day we celebrate the United States declaring it’s independence from Great Britain. The day we as a collective decided to fight for our freedom and separation from England.

It’s something we often take for granted… How lucky we in the United States are. We have so many freedoms, so many opportunities, so much to be thankful for. We may get frustrated with politicians or disagree with the government but we have the right to voice that opinion and to fight for our rights even now.

Today is a day we also need to thank our military. The brave men and women who defend us all the time and who make sacrifices in their own lives in order to keep us safe.

May you all have a safe and wonderful 4th of July! Enjoy the festivities!

Charlie’s 2 Year Old Photos | Decatur, IL | Children Photography

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

I was so excited when Amber called and asked me if I would take pictures of her little man. Charlie is such a cutie! I absolutely love this little boy! We decided to get some pictures of the little man in his room. Amber did a great job designing his room using a Cars theme (his favorite movie) and Charlie Brown, and it was absolutely perfect for getting some super cute pictures of this happy little guy. Here’s the sneak peek. Enjoy!

Why Professional Photographers Charge So Much

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Whether you are looking for a wedding photographer or just looking to get portraits taken of you and your family, you may begin to wonder why professional photography costs so much. I have heard people talk about the expense of photography time and time again, but they rarely realize why these professionals charge what they do. Here you will find just a few reasons professional photographers charge what they do.

The first thing you have to realize is that these professionals are running a business. Whether they have a studio and other employees or if they work solo out of their home, any business is going to have overhead – expenses that need to be considered like marketing materials, insurance, government taxes, membership fees, etc.

Of course they also have a significant amount of high quality and expensive equipment. A camera isn’t the only piece of equipment a photographer needs either. Most photographers will have at least 2 cameras, several lenses, a computer, software, tripods, backdrops, and lights of some kind. All of these things add up and can cost a significant amount. While these may not be annual purchases, maintenance is definitely required and money needs to be set aside in case something should happen and one of these expensive pieces of equipment needs replaced.

On top of that, professional photographers are always looking to educate themselves further. Whether it’s through an organization like Professional Photographers of America or through seminars or workshops, these all cost money to join and/or attend. By continuing to educate themselves, professional photographers are able to provide their clients with the best quality photos possible as well as the most current and unique products.

With their continuing education comes a great deal of skill and expertise. Photographers don’t just take a picture; they know how to create it. A great photo requires more than a person pushing the button the camera. It requires understanding lighting, positioning, placement, and timing. Sometimes they help spark an emotion by getting your kids laughing through a funny joke or setting a scene for you to look longingly into your husband’s eyes. These are the things a professional has learned through education and years of practice.

Many professional photographers do it all themselves. They are a CEO, a marketer, a secretary, a banker, a salesperson, a janitor, an organizer, and a photographer. That’s a lot of hats for one person to wear and it takes a great deal of time to do all these jobs. Especially when one person is doing them on their own.

Most importantly a professional photographer has the knowledge and ability to make you look phenomenal. Sure your sister’s friend can take photos for you with her little point-and-shoot from Wal-Mart, and you’ll probably save some money. But you’ll be missing out on the experience and quality that come from having a professional take your photos. In the end, it really boils down to what matters most to you: Saving a few extra bucks or hiring a professional photographer to help you capture and create moments that will last for a lifetime.

On-Location Photography vs. Studio Photography

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Once upon a time, only the elite few made it into the realm of professional photography, and these professionals almost always had a studio. However in the digital age we currently live in, you can find a photographer on practically every street corner. But not all these photographers have their own studio. Some people question the professionalism of those photographers known as “on-location” photographers. Here are just a few ways on-location photography can be more powerful than studio shots.
A studio setting often creates a bit more anxiety, tension and a feeling of being trapped. It doesn’t matter if the session is for kids or adults, getting your photo taken can be stressful. There’s the worries of how you look, a new place, a person you don’t really know, whether your kids are going to behave, and on and on and on. But for some reason meeting at a location you choose and often outdoors seems a lot more relaxed and a lot less intimidating.
This reduction in stress makes an on-location session so much more fun than a studio session. Let’s say you’re doing a family session at a park. Your kids are going to be able to run around and be themselves. They’ll be happier which will make you happier. And you’ll get some absolutely gorgeous images of your kids being themselves and enjoying themselves.
Another benefit of on-location photography is that it gives you a chance to pick a location that means something to you. Maybe you’re getting your engagement photos taken in front of the diner where your fiance proposed. Maybe you’re getting your family photos at a park where your family goes on walks. Maybe you’re getting your senior photos at the place where you love to sit and think. By being able to choose your location, you get to add one more level of yourself to that photo. It puts you in a picturesque location that will trigger an emotional connection every time you look at your photos.
Of course there’s also the benefit of natural props. In a studio you’re most likely sitting on stools or standing on boxes to create this perfectly organized group of people. But in an on-location session you’ll be utilizing the things that are present at your location. It may a tree, a bench, a little cafe table, or maybe it’s just the ground. Using these natural pieces makes your photos seem more like they captured a moment in your life. They weren’t posed, they were a spontaneous capture of your life.
While studio photography will always be a beneficial option for those who prefer to maintain complete control of their session, on-location photography is becoming a much greater factor in professional photography sessions. Whether it’s for family photos, senior sessions, or portraits, you just can’t beat the natural beauty and simplicity of the great outdoors.

A new possibility…possibly.

I’ve been using blogger as my blog site for quite a long while now and have been thoroughly pleased with it’s simplicity and easy to manipulate design. But I thought I ought to give wordpress a chance since I’ve heard so many good things about it and it seems far easier to incorporate wordpress into my actually website than blogger.

…So we’ll see what happens.

There is a Photo Contest going on right now called “The Emerging Photographer of the Year Award” and I decided to enter. Since the new website isn’t up yet, I figured I would create this one post compiling some of what I consider to be my best photographs. And because I’m obsessed with organization I have them divided into sections. As I stated in my email for the competition my specialty is natural lighting and lifestyle photography.

Happy New Year!

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Happy New Year Everyone!

I’m looking forward to this year and am very hopefully that business will continue to pick up. The past couple of weeks have been busy with family gatherings more than work, but this week it is all shifting back over into work mode.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, I’m anticipating having a meeting with LineTime for their product website that we’ve been working on. The site is currently online, but we are looking into the organization of the site and how to make it a bit more user friendly as far as navigation and content goes.
On Wednesday this week I will be doing 1 year old photos for Kelly’s little girl. I’m looking forward to doing some more children photos. Also on Wednesday and Thursday I will be speaking at the Career Fair for Macon County 8th graders at Richland Community College. This is my second year as a speaker for the fair. I always enjoy it. I usually get at least a few kids who show a real interest in design and/or photography and ask a lot of questions. So I’m really looking forward to it.
Then Friday we are leaving for Morris, IL again. My photography partner, Nicole, and I have paid for a booth in the Morris Bridal Show at Jennifer’s Gardens. This will be our first bridal show as vendors. So we’re very excited about it and optimistic that we’ll get a bit more business through the event. So if you live up in the Chicago area and have some free time. Feel free to stop by the show – admittance is $5 this year.

Update for this week

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Well this week has been very chill. I’ve been working on our bathroom remodel project. Ryan finally managed to get all the tile done in the shower so I’ve been working on getting the tiles ready for grouting. We’re getting closer everyday. :) When we get it all done – I’ll post a bunch of pics so you can see the before and after.

Next week I have two more senior photos scheduled and I’m incredibly excited about them. Check back next week to see the update!
