Anticipating a Year of Greatness…

February 22nd, 2012

After everything that happened last year…. I have felt more than once that this year is our year:  that things can only go up and great things are going to happen. But I also believe that I have to meet greatness halfway, and that’s what I’m trying to do this year.

For the past almost four years, I’ve lived, ate, and breathed photography and work… and honestly I still do. But I’m trying my darnedest to learn balance. This year I want to find that middle ground between working all the time and letting go of it completely to enjoy time with my family. Although Ryan and I don’t have kids yet, I absolutely look forward to the day when we do and I want to know that when we have little ones I’m going to be able to still run this business and give them the time and attention they need.

Another reason for me to find this middle ground is so that I can take better care of myself. When I say that photography consumed my life these past few years – I’m not joking. I make it such a priority to provide my clients with the absolute best customer service  that I often don’t leave time for myself to get out and get some exercise or cook a healthy meal. But that’s already been changing this year and I’m excited about the prospect of finally getting myself back in shape again.

Working Out

I’m also taking some time to work on my creative and artistic side. I’ve managed to get my hands on several books I’m very excited about. And I’m already starting to put them to use. One of these books in particular is called The Artist’s Way. I’ve really been enjoying this book. It’s set up to be like a course with homework assignments and things you’re supposed to do each week. I’m sure some people would find it a little hokey, but I love the idea of unlocking more of your creative side and really figuring yourself out a little more. But I liked school and homework so this is right up my alley. :)

The Complete Artist's Way

Of course, I’m immensely looking forward to having my own home again! I can’t even begin to express how incredibly anxious I am for progress to be made on the construction of our house. The most excited I’ve felt during all this is when we got our official blue print for the house a few weeks ago! It was so nice to have something tangible in our hands that we could hold and look at and actually see the future a little more clearly.

Our Home Blue Print

But outside of that excitement – the weather is slowing us down. With all the dampness we’ve had the past few weeks – very little progress has been able to be made. Right now we’re waiting for the basement floor to get poured, but we need several dry days in a row before they’ll be able to pour it. (And we had rain again yesterday so it’s not looking great for them to get anything done this week.) I’ll be honest – I’m not a patient person to begin with so this little life experience is definitely a lesson in patience for me. But we’d definitely appreciate prayers for dry weather!

Basement Walls

So yup! I’ve got big dreams for this year, and I know they’re going to take a lot of work, but I think I’m up for the challenge! I’m just really excited for what this year is going to hold for us and for you! I hope you all are having an awesome Wednesday, and I’ll see you back here on Friday!

LSA JV Boy’s Basketball Game + Cheerleaders + Mascot | Decatur, IL | Event Photography

February 20th, 2012

It’s been a few weeks ago now that I took these pictures of the JV Boys Basketball team. It was the last home game, and I was really hoping to get some more pictures of the cheerleaders too – so I figured I’d pop into the JV game and snap some pics. I also was pleased when I showed up to see that the school mascot was present for the game too so I had some fun taking photos of him too! :)

It was a well played game by both teams and our boys did a really good job! I was glad I was able to make it to this last home game to capture some of the fun and excitement! Enjoy! :)

Showin Some Love: Apps

February 17th, 2012

After the fire, I started having some trouble with my cell phone and since I needed to replace my phone I decided to go ahead and splurge on an iPhone. Not the fancy new one, but the older model. I just needed something functional and I’ll admit I was kind of looking forward to having a nicer phone that might simplify my life. And it sure has!

It’s made it easier for me to stay on top of emails, what’s going with the Facebook page and staying in touch with my awesome clients. But it’s also added some fun perks to my life too! So I thought I’d share some of my favorite apps with you! Perhaps some of these are favorite apps of yours too or maybe they’re new ones I’m introducing you to! Either way I hope you find this a fun little peek into some things I’m loving! :)

• Instagram
Instagram was one of the first apps I knew I wanted to get for my new phone. Several of my other photographer friends had this app already so I knew I wanted to tinker with this fun photo app. It’s really neat. You can take pictures, add a retouch to them, and then share them through the app. It’s really quick, clean, and easy. And it’s even super simple to share the pictures with my friends on Facebook and twitter.

Instagram App
• C25K Free
I just recently got this app since my friend Amber and I decided to start getting in shape again. We agreed to do the Couch to 5K together. So when I found this handy little app that tells me when to run, walk, warm up and cool down – I was pretty excited. It simplifies my workout so I’m not having to think to hard about the numbers…. which I love!

C25K App

• My Fitness Pal
Fitness Pal was another app I knew I wanted to get for my phone before I had a fancy phone. This app makes tracking calories, exercise, etc incredibly easy! I love that I can even plug in my own recipes to figure out how many calories I’m consuming in a meal. I can save recipes, exercises, and foods to my app too so it’s easy for me to find them later. I’m hoping between this app and the C25K app I’ll be getting my booty back in shape. ;)

My Fitness Pal App

• Pinterest
As I’m sure you already know – I’m a HUGE Pinterest addict. So the fact that there’s an app for Pinterest only makes me that much more giddy. I still prefer the website version over the app, but I do love being able to scan through it on my phone when I’m waiting at the doctor’s office or something. I always find cool things on there.Pinterest App

• Scramble with Friends
I only recently downloaded this app too, but I’m addicted! I’ve played Words with Friends, but it didn’t hook me like this game did. I love that each game is only 2 minutes long. It’s more a game of speed and word searching where word of friends requires a bit of analytics…. and when I need a break from work I don’t usually want to have to think. It’s a perfect little break from work. So I LOVE this game! :)

Scramble With Friends App

So there you have it – some of my favorite phone apps. Hopefully you found this little bit of app love to be fun! I hope you all are having a wonderful Friday and that you get to do something SUPER fun this weekend! See you back here on Monday! :)

Goonan Boys Mini Session | Decatur, IL | Children’s Photography

February 15th, 2012

Since it’s the day after Valentine’s Day, I thought this was the perfect day to share with you the pictures from our Tutus & Bow Ties Mini Session. I didn’t quite get the boom of customers I was hoping for… Actually I only had one taker for our first mini session. But I was thrilled to have the Goonan boys in the studio again for some fun Valentine’s Day photos. I love these kids a ton! They are so much fun and they have some pretty awesome parent’s too! ;)

We did the mini session in the studio with all three boys. We did our best to get pictures of each of the boys individually and then at least one good one of the three of them together. I’ll admit it was a bit of challenge getting the group shot. A couple of the little guys were hungry and not in the mood to have their pictures taken. (I know exactly how they felt! I’m not partial to having my picture taken either and I definitely get crabby when I’m hungry. hehe) But we had fun playing around and shooting away.

Enjoy the Goonan’s sneak peek! :)

Products: The Keitel Maternity/Newborn Story Book

February 13th, 2012

I started thinking the other day… I’m always posting the latest wedding album designs on the blog for you to see, but you rarely get to see the other books I’ve laid out. So I thought today I’d show you a Story Book we designed for a couple from Effingham who came to me for maternity and newborn photos.

This was an awesome couple to work with! I absolutely love them! And I’m so glad we got to put together a Story Book for them of their maternity photos and Abigail’s newborn photos. She’s such a sweet baby girl and I can’t believe how big she’s gotten already! Kids just grow too fast you guys! :)

So here’s a little peek at the book we put together for the Keitel’s. :)

Kietel Newborn Book 1

Kietel Newborn Book 2

So just one thing to note. You’ll probably notice that all the albums you’ve previously seen lay flat open on their own. The Story Books are bound like standard books – so they have that little crease in the middle and they don’t lay open on their own. The pages are also thinner than the album pages. Luckily Ryan was at the studio with me this day so he could hold the book open for me to get some easier shots of the inside. :)

So there you have it! A little peek at one of our story books. I’m going to be showing you more of the studio samples as we go along here in the next couple of months. And I’m hoping by early April at the latest I’ll be able to post some photos of the whole studio for you to see! Until next time – have an awesome Monday and I’ll see you back here on Wednesday!

Charlie Freund Turns Three! | Mt. Zion, IL | Children’s Photogrphy

February 10th, 2012

I was super excited to do Charlie’s Three Year Old session! I’ve been taking pictures of this little guy since he turned a year old, and I look forward to doing his pictures every year! It was a little bit chilly out (but warmer than you’d expect for February) when we decided to venture out to Fort Daniel’s park for Charlie’s session. Charlie’s momma, Amber, brought along some of his toy guns and we went “hunting” for his Papa Jay out in the woods.

Three is that fun age in kids when they start developing their own opinions and “no” is often their favorite word. So today Charlie’s opinion was that he did NOT want his picture taken. And he was very serious about finding Papa Jay wherever he was hiding. Amber and I got shushed many times by this little guy for talking too loud when we were trying to sneak up on the elusive grandpa Charlie couldn’t seem to find.

Well here’s just a quick look at some of the moments we managed to snag on our little adventure :)

Five Elements of a Great Image

February 8th, 2012

As a photographer, it’s incredibly important to know what makes a great picture. Just having a nice camera and fancy tools isn’t enough to really make it in this industry anymore. Knowing what to look for and honing in on those specific things can help you capture truly unique, personal, and in the moment images that will hopefully help to set you apart from your peers. Here’s just a few things that I look for during a session

• Composition
I had a little bit of trouble deciding what was the most important aspect of an image. But finally after much thought – I came to the conclusion that composition should be the first thing you consider when taking a picture. Composition can actually make or break an image. There are some images that seem boring and mundane until you recompose them. For example:

CompositionNow I’ve seen many pictures of the bride and groom (or engaged couple) laying in this pose. But most often when you see this kind of picture – it’s a close up of their faces and maybe the tops of their shoulders. This is a uniquely composed image. Not only are we seeing their whole bodies at a nice little 45 degree angle, but we also have this wonderful circular tile pattern on the floor. Couple that with the brides fanned out train and veil and it makes a really beautiful eye-catching and unique image.

Here’s another good example:

Composition 2

I LOVE this picture! How cute is this little girl! I’ve seen so many pictures of little kids peeking over things, waiting for dad to get home, etc. But this one is from a different angle. You don’t often see a profile shot of the child. And this photo is taken so that that all the focus is on the girl’s beautiful blue eye and gorgeous long lashes! It just makes me smile every time I see it!

One more example of composition:

Composition 3

This is another image that takes a standard sort of pose and gives it an all new twist by changing up the composition. In actuality the coupe in this image is actually just a reflection. The only part of them we really see is the thighs down. The other interesting thing to note is that the couple is not distorted in the reflection – which actually takes a bit of preparation and patience to reach just the right angle to avoid a lot of distortion. All in all – this makes for a really unique image!

• Story Telling
This is a trait I personally find important – although not everyone does. I think the best pictures tell the story of the people in it. Now this may be some kind of artistic creation which can be really cool like in this picture:

But usually what I’m talking about is more just an image relaying an event that occurred, an emotion, or just a little about the people in the picture. So here’s an example:

Story Telling 2

I love this picture! There is so much awesomeness here between the lighting, composition, and story told. Obviously this is a proud new daddy. Sure maybe the babies not in full view and it’s a tightly cropped picture, but a story is very clearly told. You can tell this baby is brand-spankin’-new! And that Daddy is so proud and happy, and just look at that beaming momma in the background! I’d be willing to guess these are first time parents and they are just completely infatuated with this new little person. Love it!

Here’s another cute one:

Another picture I love! So since we’re focusing on the story here’s what I get from this picture. I see this beautiful, sweet little girl, soft colors and flowers galore. She’s the picture of little girl innocence and sweetness. She’s possibly making a wish while she’s blowing those flower petals, and it makes me wonder what she’s wishing for. I also feel as though I know what she’s going to do right after this shot. She looks up bright eyed and grinning from ear to ear. It’s just a simple picture that says a lot to me.

Here’s the last one I’ll show (and it’s the only one of my own I’m going to give as an example):

Story Telling 4

So here’s why I love  this image! Since I took this picture – I know this couple a bit. We so often see pictures of young people – it’s nice to occasionally see the contrast of those who are ahead of us. This is a couple who has obviously been together for a very long time. Married for who knows how many years. A couple that is very much still in love and enjoys spending time together. Even if it’s just to read the morning paper. I see love when I look at this picture and its the kind of love I hope to have when I’m their age.

• Emotion
We are often taking pictures of faces. Everyone’s face is totally unique and different and so much emotion can be seen just in a person’s face. So many, many, many pictures are of people’s faces. Here’s a great example of a highly emotive image focusing on people’s faces:

Emotion 1

When I look at this image – I see utter joy. The happiness and glee between these two friends is just beautiful to see. It’s something that you might pose – but a genuine emotion that you can’t force. It’s the kind of picture that if this was me and my bestie – I’d be holding onto this for years so that when we’re 80 we can look back and realize how many years of fun we had.

Here’s my next example:

Emotion 2

What an awesome father and child picture! This is another great image for story telling too. But the emotion and lighting is what makes this an awesome picture! That subtle smile, the peace and calm in dad’s face, the gentle way forehead is touching forehead… It’s as though this dad is trying to convey to his child telekinetically how much love he has for his little one. If this was a photo of me and my dad – I’d be cherishing this picture forever!

Here’s my last example:

Emotion 3

Emotion in a picture doesn’t always need to be happiness or joy sometimes it can be something different – like sadness, loneliness, relief, peace, calm. It could be anything. This image conveys a completely different emotion than the previous two. I look at this picture and I feel like I’m there. I’ve done this exact thing before. Nothing fills me with more calm and peace than nature. Just being outside, feeling the breeze on my face, and letting go of my stress, worries and fears. To me this picture depicts relief, peace, and freedom.

• Detail
I find detail images to be fascinating and often some of my favorite images. We focus on people’s faces so much that sometimes it’s fun to mix things up and throw in some pictures of other little details to remind ourselves of the little things. Like in this image:

Details 1

What momma doesn’t love sweet little baby toes or the reminder that at one point in time her baby’s legs could fit in her hands. Kids grow so fast – it’s these little details that we forget too quickly so having sweet little reminders like this is often the sweetest gift we could get.

Here’s another one I love:

Details 2

This may be a small picture and heads may be chopped off, but I love how much content there still is to this image. I love the way her hands are tucked back towards her chest and he’s hanging on to her. I love the kiss and the composition. So much is captured in this image without showing their faces.

Here’s the last one:

Details 3

This one is similar to the previous image but it’s even more subtle and tightly cropped. I love that all you’re seeing is their inner elbows, the tops of their inner knees and his hand. And yet you can still guess what the look on their faces might be. I also love thinking that perhaps this couple isn’t that type that likes PDA (public displays of affection) but they have their own little ways of letting each other know they’re thinking about them and they like having them close – like the subtle touch of his finger on her arm. :)

• Lighting
Lighting is the last element and probably one of the most important because you need light just to create a picture or to set a mood. I’m sure you’ve noticed some of the awesome lighting in the previous pictures, but I’ll give you just a few more examples. Here’s an interesting take on backlighting:

Lighting 1

I love that the couple is the darkest part of this picture (which is the opposite of how you would normally shoot. I love the lens flare over the top of them and they style of silhouetting. I also love that the balloons become more translucent when backlit in this fashion. It creates for a really dynamic and unique image!

Lighting 2This is one of my favorite ways to utilize natural light. You can create awesome natural soft boxes by having your subject stand in front of a window and using those lovely sheer curtains to create the perfect soft box. One of the perks to shooting this way is that you get these amazing high contrast photos. Here’s another example of a single light source – high contrast photo:

Lighting 3
See the awesome moody silhouettes you can create with this kind of lighting. With the solid black backdrop and the one back light you get the perfect silhouette of this gorgeous pregnant momma. It’s an incredibly visually stunning image.

Well there you have it. You now know the five elements that help in creating stunning imagery. Composition can help you take a standard pose and give it a new twist. Story telling can help you relay more about a person or couple in an image. Emotion is often one of the most important elements to a picture especially when conveying joy or happiness. Detail shots can make for a great reminder of the little things we love in others. And of course, lighting will always make a break a picture since light is what actually enables us to take a picture.

I hope you found this at least a little helpful or insightful. If nothing else – you got to see some beautiful pictures by other photographers. I hope you’re having a great Wednesday and that I’ll see you back here on Friday!

As LSA’s official photographer – I managed to make my way over to LSA High School for the girls’ basketball game at the end of January. It was one of the girls’ tournament games, and I was really excited to see the girls’ compete! And boy! Did they! They played one stellar game and knocked the other team out of the water! Just a Quick Post

February 1st, 2012

So I really didn’t get this post done today as early as I would have liked. You all are keeping me so busy with all your story book orders, print orders, and videos! I’m so excited to see everything come in!

Hopefully you are either a fan of Green Tree Media on Facebook or you’ve signed up for the newsletter because we sent out notifications to everyone we could to remind you that the print prices have gone up as of today. We are now set up that all prints larger than a 10×10 are mounted on matboard with a protective coating. So you don’t have to worry about creases, dings, or fading.

I was really hoping I’d be showing the updated studio and our new sample products by now, but unfortunately we aren’t quite ready yet. I’ve got a few more things to design and order and one more wall portrait to figure out before we’ll be ready. But I’m hoping very soon to have all these wonderful new goodies to show you!

We had our first ever Tutus and Bow Ties mini session last weekend, and I’ll admit it was the band I was hoping to start off with. I was glad to have the little kiddos I did have though and we had tons of fun in the studio! I’m hoping the next mini session we do will have a few more takers. Otherwise – we won’t be offering them again next year.

I’m sorry this blog post is so short and late guys. I’m just doing my darnedest to stay up with all your requests! I promise there will be a much longer blog post on Friday! Until then – have a great couple of days! :)

Elayna Harker’s Three Year Old Session | Decatur, IL | Children Photography

January 30th, 2012

I was so excited to be taking pictures of miss Elayna for her third birthday! The last time I took pictures of this sweet little gal was when she was turning one, and boy has she grown up! She’s got her own ideas and opinions and she absolutely loves shoes and the color pink!

We had some fun getting her to warm up. She was a little shy of me and my camera. Plus, she knew her brothers were in the room next door playing with some toys and she’s used to being in the middle of the action with her siblings. After a few minutes snuggling with mom, Grandma Donna flipping her upside down for some fun smiley pics, and a quick costume change. Elayna was all smiles and fun!

Hope you enjoy Elayna’s sneak peek!
